Civil liability
In short, civil liability means that a natural person or a legal person is liable for compensating for damage caused by him/her. The main purpose of liability law is therefore to repair or compensate for damage suffered.

Obligation, unlawful act, breach of contract and damage
When you commit an unlawful act against another person, you are obliged to compensate the resulting damage to the other person. Where an obligation has been concluded, the person who fails to fulfil this obligation is obliged to compensate the damage suffered by the other party as a result, unless the shortcoming cannot be attributed to the debtor. In that case, there is a breach of contract.

Exclusion of liability
In some cases, in particular when two business parties conclude an agreement, liability is limited or completely excluded by one party by means of an  exoneration clause. Such stipulations can generally be found in the applicable general terms and conditions.

Directors' liability
As a director of a company, you may, under certain circumstances, be personally liable to creditors of the company who have suffered damage. This is called directors' liability.

Liability of bank, supervisor, lawyer, doctor or notary
In addition, banks can be liable to its customers or to third parties if they violate its (special) duty of care. Furthermore, you have the liability of supervisors if it turns out that they have not supervised sufficiently. The government can also be liable, for example towards a citizen. There is then government liability. If a notary, a doctor or a lawyer fails to provide her services, she may be obliged to compensate for the resulting damage. This refers to professional liability. The same applies to other service providers, for example accountants. An auditor can be held liable if she does not act as may be expected of a reasonably acting accountant.

Employer's liability
Employer's liability  is at issue if an employer is liable for his employee or the liability for an auxiliary person, whereby you as a contractor are liable for the subcontractor hired by you, for example.
